The vaccination centre at the fairgrounds has moved to Bohunice hospital

After nine months, the first large-scale vaccination centre in the Czech Republic ended its operation at the exhibition centre. During this time, 400,000 vaccination doses were administered there. FN Brno – the University Hospital – will continue administering vaccines, in a smaller capacity, directly in its Bohunice premises. The role of the exhibition centre in the Covid-19 pandemic is over for the moment being. As of 31 August, both the Podané ruce sampling centre and FN Brno vaccination centre closed up. Initially, the G2 Hall was ready to serve as a field hospital which was not needed in the end, and that was why it transformed into the vaccination centre. 400,000 doses have been administered and over a thousand volunteers have taken part. “It was not always easy, plenty of complications ensued, and the more I appreciate the capabilities and willingness of the staff able to tackle all obstacles, overcome psychic pressure, keep the centre going, flexibly react to required changes, and vaccinate hundreds of thousands of those interested in it. I would like to thank sincerely and heartily to all individuals and their teams without whom it would be impossible to launch and run the vaccination centre smoothly,” said Ondřej Ludka, FN Brno’s Deputy Director for health care.  Of course, there will still be a chance to get the vaccine in Brno. A list of all vaccination centres can be found here; sampling centres are here (both lists are in Czech only).…

What will the beginning of the school year be like? With tests and without face masks

From 25 August, the Brno City Municipality coordinated the delivery of antigen tests to Brno schools – primary, secondary and conservatories. The tests were delivered by municipality employees with help of voluntary firemen. The first round of testing of pupils will start on 1 September. The firemen brought the boxes with antigen tests from the state reserves to their regional headquarters at the beginning of this week and on Wednesday, 25 August, municipal drivers and voluntary firemen delivered the 164 thousand kits directly to 119 schools. Within the South Moravian Region, a total of 454 thousand tests were delivered. The 16 Brno schools that have decided for PCR tests had to provide for them themselves. The state contributes CZK 200 per piece of this type of test.  The testing of children at schools will start at the beginning of the school year. In the first round, tests are scheduled for 1, 6 and 9 September. Only first graders will have their first test on 2 September to enjoy their first school day without troubles. Further proceedings will follow the current epidemic situation with possible regular weekly testing. There is an exception from these rules for pupils, students and teachers or school employees who are fully protected by vaccination or can show their own valid test from a laboratory. People who underwent the Covid-19 disease before 180 or fewer days do not have to undergo testing either. Pupils and students who do not want to undergo testing, will be obliged to wear a respirator or other protection (FFP2/KN 95 class) or a surgical face mask for the whole time of classes. Detailed information can be found here (in Czech only).…

The City will relieve COVID-affected businessmen of part of their rents, applications to be submitted by end of May

This year’s May, June and July’s rent at half the price. This is how the City wants to support businessmen who have rented municipal commercial spaces and at the same time, the governmental restrictions have banned or limited their business considerably (e.g. to a take-away window only). This measure does not apply to properties administered by city districts, their leaders decide about possible compensations independently. After postponing the payable date for rents (press release in Czech) which was approved by the City councillors at the end of March, the City follows with another step to support local businessmen in reaction to announced governmental compensation programmes. For May, June and July, they can pay a half-price rent only. It is necessary to apply for this support and it will be provided to all tenants who meet the conditions – i.e. those who have rented commercial spaces from the Municipality, who have had to limit their business significantly, e.g. by operating a take-away window only, or have had to stop it completely, and who do not have any debts for the rent and associated services for the period till the end of 2020, or will pay for this debt by the end of May as the case may be. The application form (in Czech), universal for tenants from any municipal department, can be found on the city’s website. Applications are to be submitted by the end of May. …

SAKO: How to handle waste during pandemic

Does a paper face mask belong to sorted waste? Do covid-19-infected have to do anything special about their waste? Will the waste collection centres be closed due to governmental regulations? The SAKO Brno municipal company gives answers to basic questions concerning waste during the pandemic. Disposable face masks – sort or not sort? Always throw your used disposable face masks into mixed waste. If you sorted them and threw into a coloured container, they would go to a sorting line whose staff would get in contact with them. From the mixed waste dustbin, though, they go straight to the incinerator, being machine-handled throughout their way from the dustbin lorry to the boiler. Moreover, the high temperature of the incineration destroys viruses and other pathogens safely. For precautionary reasons, ill people or those under quarantine should not sort their waste. The sorting lines’ staff would be again endangered by contact with them. Put all the waste in a tied up bag and then in mixed waste; ideally, disinfect the bag’s surface. More information here. Waste collection centres remain open. However, the rules of their operation are adjusted to be in line with governmental regulations. Wearing face masks and keeping distance is a matter of course. Only one person (or one car) will be allowed to enter, and only after he/she leaves, another one will be let in. The staff will advise people about the proper containers, but for hygienic reasons they will not help with handling the waste. This is also why the collection of items at REUSE and RENAB points is suspended. Please note that the links are in Czech language only. …
